Choose The Right Lift Chair Size
Your height and weight are important when choosing the appropriate size of your lift chair, as are things like how comfortably your hips fit into the chair. Measuring is an important part of choosing the right size.
Match the chair you have now: If you have a recliner you sit in all the time now that you find comfortable, measure the width of the seat, the back height from the top of the back to the seat, and the distance from the floor to the seat. Our lift chair specialist can take those measurements and find recliners that will be perfect for you, if you'll call 1 (800) 346-1699.
If you don't have a recliner to measure: If you don't currently have a recliner you can easily measure, then sit on a firm surface like a love seat or couch and put a cardboard box on each side of your hips. Have a dog or cat that likes to sit next to you? Don't forget to adjust one box out to account for the pet. Move the boxes, pretending they'll be the sides of your chair, until you feel comfortable. After you rise, measure the distance between them. Get help if necessary to measure the distance from the back of the seat to your knee, for the proper depth. As your measure for this, your legs should hang over the end of the seat, with your calves touching the seat. The distance from the top of the chair to the seat cushion is what determines where your head will rest. Finally, the distance from the top of the seat cushion to the floor is important, so your legs don't dangle and your feet can rest comfortably on the floor when you're in your lift recliner chair. You need your feet on the floor when the chair starts lifting so you can stand safely. Call our specialists at 1 (800) 346-1699 if you need more helping figuring the proper measurements.
Lift Chairs For Tall People: People who are six feet and taller can get models that have the option of lift extensions for the foot rest. Our specialists can point you toward those models. Call 1 (800) 346-1699 to find out more about this feature.
Weight Limits and Capacities: It's important to pay attention to the weight limits some chairs have. Anyone who is significantly overweight needs a lift chair seat that is reinforced to last and not wear quickly. Choose a lift chair that has a weight capacity that's above your weight, but as close to it as possible. There are 500 to 600 pound models available, and a special bariatric model designed for those up to 700 pounds.
