Manual Racks For Wheelchairs & Scooters Guide
Manual Racks for Scooters and Wheelchairs
Manual racks are simply platform scooter and wheelchair racks that drop down manually so you can load a power scooter or wheelchair. A user can stand next to the ramp and easily drive the mobility device up the ramp and onto the rack. The scooter or wheelchair will level out the platform automatically so that the wheelchair is ready to be tied down. Many of these racks come with straps that are like seatbelts or rings in the corners that can be threaded with tie-down straps. You can choose between a rack that stays out and ready for use, or one that folds flat against the back of your vehicle to save space. You will also need to consider whether the rack will block access to the rear doors of your van or SUV, or your trunk.
When you use this type of rack carrier, your scooter or wheelchair is obviously outside the vehicle and exposed to elements. You'll need a cover to protect it from dirt, debris, weather and anything that might fly up from the road. It's also a good idea to have an extra cover, because these can become damaged fairly easily. Try something like a grill cover from Lowes that will fit the dimensions of your mobility device. It's a good, inexpensive option to have on hand in case you find yourself in need of a new cover.
